1. Wash your hands well with soap and water. Use the soapy
lather to wash the catheter. Rinse well.


2. Position yourself on a toilet seat, a wheelchair, in a bed,
or whatever position provides the most comfort. Place a
collection container between your legs if you are using one.


3. Lubricate the catheter, if necessary, from the tip extending
back about two inches.


4. Spread the labia (lips) apart with the second and fourth
fingers of your left hand if you are right-handed. with the
catheter in your right hand, insert the catheter gently into
the urethra. You will know the catheter is in the bladder
when urine begins to flow.


5. Empty the bladder completely. When the urine stops, apply
gentle pressure over the bladder with your hand on your
lower abdomen before removing the catheter. If you have
been requested to measure your output, note the amount of
urine before discarding it.


6. Wash the catheter with soap and water, dry thoroughly, and store
it in your carrying case.
