1. Wash your hands well with soap and water and use the soap to lather
the catheter. Thoroughly rinse hands and the catheter .

2. Position yourself on a toilet seat, on a wheelchair, bed or in whatever
position you find most comfortable. Place the collection container (if one is
being used) between your legs.

3. Lubricate copiously half the length of the catheter .

4. If you are uncircumcised, pull back the foreskin. Grasp the penis firmly
in your left hand, if you are right handed, and insert the catheter through
the opening of the urethra into the bladder with the right hand. If you
meet resistance, use a gentle but firm pressure until the catheter passes.

Never use force on the catheter that hurts. Insert the catheter one inch
beyond the point where the urine begins to flow.

5. Empty bladder completely. When the urine stops, apply gentle pressure
over the area of the bladder with your hand, by pressing down on the
lower abdomen before removing the catheter. When you are sure the
bladder is empty , remove the catheter .

6. If you have been instructed to measure the urinary output, do it at this
point, noting the amount of urine before discarding it. Wash the catheter
with soap and water, and dry thoroughly before returning it to your place of
storage.
