PROSTATE ULTRASOUND AND PROSTATE
BIOPSY WITH ULTRASOUND:

POSTOPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

You  have been scheduled for a prostate ultrasound and/or prostate
biopsy with ultrasound. This involves placing a probe in the rectal
area and taking ultrasonic pictures of the prostate. If a biopsy is
performed, this involves placing a small needle through a guide in
the probe so that it can be directed through the rectum into the
prostate. This procedure is generally well tolerated by our patients,
as there are no pain endings in the prostate that would lead to
significant discomfort. Prior to your procedure, please take a Fleet's
enema the morning of your appointment. This may be obtained at
any pharmacy without prescription. You will receive a prescription
for an antibiotic prior to the procedure with a short course of
antibiotics thereafter lasting approximately three days.

Once the biopsy is performed, you may expect'some blood in your
urine, stool, and/or ejaculate. If the consistency of the urine is that
of water and is only red from the bleeding, this is acceptable. If
however, the bleeding is thick with large clots, please inform our
office. The discoloration or blood in your ejaculate may last for
some time thereafter. You may notice a mild fever on the first day,
after your procedure. Please contact our office if the fever is over
101° and persists. You may note blood in your stool; however, if
you are passing blood repeatedly, please contact our office.
